The Unknown is the sixth chapter in a series of exhibitions inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s classic adventure story; The Count of Monte Cristo.
Working in a range of disciplines and media, the artists’ each plot their own
responses to the novel’s settings and overarching themes of betrayal, disguise,
revenge and patience, mapping out a narrative of imagined objects, characters,
conversations and relics. For Treasure, the artists will respond to the context of the chapel space and its particular atmosphere. (Asylum)
The unattainable treasure: These are the ones that whisper the promise of good health and riches. They encourage an obsessional delight in their collection and become desired by retaining their mystery.
Illuminated: Bright sun streams in through stained glass, a beautiful vivid red draws my eyes heavenwards. The monuments set into the chapel walls draw my attention back down and among the ruins are the hand made treasures and obscure objects, they twinkle in the light and my treasure search has started.
Artists: Annabel Dover/Hayley Lock/Cathy Lomax/Alex Pearl/Mimei Thompson
