I can recommend having a peak at the inside of the great bronze doors of the Cathedral of St. Peter. Just by the floor to lower right. Then you should spend a day taking a trip to Ostia, Rome’s ancient harbour city. It is all in ruins, a proper roman “ghost town” (http://digg.com/u148kg). =)

Pompeii is a unique city, stopped by the eruption in a pulsing moment of life on a specific day and kept almost intact, with all that existed at that moment. Walk with us through ancient streets to visit the Villa of the Mysteries, the House of the Faun and of the Vettii brothers. Discover baths, basilicas, temples, theatres,
private homes, the amphitheater, even the palestra where
    gladiators trained for the arena.

I know it’s not in Rome but you can get day trips from Rome. If I were going I’d definitely love to see Pompeii.

Thank you Teresa, I went there as a child and in no way appreciated it. Given my attraction to some of the darker elements of life and death, I think that Pompeii NOW would be inspirational and helpful, so its going on my list.
