creative republic

Creative Republic is an independent group, made up of people who make their living in the creative industries and are passionate about representing other creative industries within Birmingham and the surrounding region.

The first Creative Republic event in Coventry lead my Helga Henry (Fierce Earth/metapod) was held earlier this week and I have to say that it is the way forward. Creatives within Coventry and Warwickshire need a proactive system of networking inspiring conversations that can lead to collaborations and guidance for business and groups within the creative industries.

Check out their website and sign up if you feel that your voice is unheard in relation to the creative culture of your city and meet others who want to make a difference.

..info

Bit of site re working. Hopefully links are easier to view now that they are categorized. Music has a place because it is an important aspect of my life, so it deserves a mention- very accessible poetry.

why post new/unfinished work?

This painting is at the very start of its life, im posting new stuff to get a bit of distance from it, as I work. Working alone now, its important to hand work over to a more critical eye.

ho-hum FREIZE

On the positive, The Chapman brothers were at the White Cube section (but it was to packed to really get near them). Here is a list of the galleries I enjoyed:
WHITE CUBE
WILKINSON
ACME
HAUSER&WIRTH
But all in all, Frieze is not the way I like to experience art.

FRANCIS BACON, TATE BRITAIN
11 SEPT 08-4 JANUARY 09

        Francis Bacon-jet of water 1988

A major retrospective and more than the average of its type. Much of Bacon’s work has wormed its way into the public subconscious and so I didn’t expect anything new and I certainly didn’t expect to re engage with Bacon’s work on such a basic level. Of course the familiar works were on show but they didn’t dominate the exhibition. For me the more grotesque and fleshy the better. Later works Like jet of water made the last room complete the exhibition with a bang rather than a thud. I havnt visited Tate Modern for the Rothko retrospective (also on now) but if you chose Bacon, he wont disappoint. Even if you think you know him.

I am setting myself a challenge to understand Bacon better and figure out why I have feared his work so much, so far.

must see…

Working in cycles

It appears that I am creative in cycles, that not until the current cycle is exhausted will I move on to the next cycle, whether this is in a method of working or subject matter. Often it is an outside force that will coincide with this change and exhaustion. I write this because I am coming up on another cycle but I do not have the security of the Art School institution to comfort me and engage (or not) with what I produce. The pressures are just as forceful but vastly different.

And there is a trap at the end of an M.A that is easy to fall into. It fools the departing student into believing that everything ends when infact its a spring board and continuation. I have the tools, in many ways, to carry on and still have access to the supportive network that was around me during the course.
Anybody in the same position should remember that. Its only as lonely as you make it.
